City announces street construction projects

Following are the road and street projects affecting traffic in San Marcos for the this week (Dec. 5-11) as announced by the City of San Marcos.

Cheatham Street: The designated right turn lane to Rio Vista Street (1000 block) will be closed through December. Motorists may continue to Cheatham-Rio Vista intersection to turn right. This is part of the Rio Vista Terrace neighborhood improvement project. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Craddock Avenue: From the intersection at Bishop Street to Purgatory Park Road, alternating lane closures will be in effect into December for street light installation and landscaping. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Downtown Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements: Construction is taking place on many of the handicap ramps throughout the downtown area. Lanes will be closed, but the streets will remain open. Scheduled completion the end of December. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

East McCarty Lane: A grand opening celebration is scheduled for Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. and road will open immediately following, weather permitting. Until then, Both lanes are closed in each direction from the Interstate-35 frontage road to Old Bastrop Highway. Local access for residents will remain, but school, postal, emergency and other motorists will be detoured to use Clovis R. Barker Road or Centerpoint Road. Ebony Street and Parker Drive: Intersection is open, but a drainage improvement project continues with detours. Motorists will be detoured to SH 123, Hays Street, Parker Drive, Broadway Street, Oakdale Drive, Patricia Drive and Ebony Street. Construction includes Ebony Street and the 100-400 blocks of Parker Drive to install a concrete drainage channel and pipe system. Construction will continue until January. Edward Gary Street and South LBJ Drive: The intersection at 200-300 block South LBJ Drive is open, but utility work will occur periodically and traffic will be detoured to San Antonio Street. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Field Street: The 1000-1100 block is closed to through traffic between Haynes Drive and McKinnon until the end of December for the installation of an eight-inch water line. Local access for residents only. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Haynes Drive: Street construction and paving from Riverside Drive to Cheatham Street will continue throughout December. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Interstate-35, Exit 206: Construction is underway at the Aquarena Springs Drive-SH 82 exit. The southbound ramp will be closed from Dec. 20 to Jan. 17 as construction takes place six days per week. Motorists will use Exit 207-River Ridge Parkway and travel on the southbound frontage road to access Aquarena Springs Drive.  Lane closures will occur on the frontage road, but access will be available at all times for motorists, school buses and emergency vehicles.  Project completion scheduled for mid-February 2011.  Call the Texas Department of Transportation at (830) 625-6278.

Prospect Street-Bishop Street drainage improvements: Construction is starting on a drainage improvement project in the 1300 block of Prospect Street and the 600 block of Bishop Street.  Motorists should be aware of traffic flaggers, construction workers and heavy equipment. Quail Run water improvements: Water line construction is underway near the Oakridge pump station at the end of Harmon’s Way. The project includes construction of 8,600 feet of 12-inch water line from the Oakridge pumping station to the Kingswood subdivision at the intersection of Quail Run and Hamilton Hollow.  The existing four-inch line that serves the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood also will be replaced. Rio Vista Street and McKinnon Street: Construction is underway from Haynes Drive to Cheatham Street to install storm sewer, water and wastewater services. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Riverside Drive: Open to traffic with utility construction continuing until further notice. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

San Antonio Street: Traffic is closed on the 100 block from North LBJ Drive to the alley every Saturday until Dec. 11 from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. for the Farmer’s Market on the Square. Call the city’s Main Street program at (512) 393-8430.

Sanitary sewer evaluation study: Uniformed inspectors will begin above ground manhole inspections and testing through end of December within local neighborhoods to include: Westover, Heritage, Dunbar, Southwest Hills, Oak Heights, Park Place, Weatherford Heights, Coers Street and Holland Street. South LBJ Drive: On the 300 block, the northbound right hand lane is closed for utility work. Estimated completion date is in December. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.

Sycamore Street: 900-1100 block is closed to through traffic until the end of December for the installation of an eight-inch water line. Local access for residents only. Call the city’s capital improvements department at (512) 393-8130.
