Work begins on River Ridge Parkway entrance ramp

SUBMITTED REPORTS

The Texas Department of Transportation, with assistance from the city of San Marcos Capital Improvements department, will begin construction of a new southbound ramp to Interstate 35 near River Ridge on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The project will add a new entrance ramp north of Aquarena Springs/ Loop 82 on the west frontage road and rebuild the existing 206 exit ramp from Interstate 35. The project will improve fire department access and ease some of the heavy traffic at the Aquarena Springs intersection resulting from development on River Ridge Parkway, including new businesses and the City’s Fire Station #5, city officials said.

Currently, there is no Interstate 35 entrance between the River Ridge and Aquarena Springs intersections. “We are thrilled to see this ramp become a reality,” said Les Stephens, fire chief. “It will greatly improve interstate access for our emergency vehicles and improve safety on a busy roadway shared by motorists and heavy trucks.”

In order to expedite the project, the southbound interstate exit 206 for Aquarena Springs Drive/ Loop 82, the primary entryway to Texas State, will be closed from Dec. 20 to Jan. 17. Construction crews will be working a six-day work week.

“Closing this exit during the holiday break for students and allowing work on Saturdays will reduce the project length from seven months to two and a half months,” said Laurie Moyer, San Marcos interim city manager. “It is the best approach to minimize construction impact on our community.”

While the exit ramp is closed, motorists will be directed to use the next exit 207-River Ridge Parkway and travel on the southbound frontage road to access Aquarena Springs Drive. Construction will affect the southbound frontage road, but access will be available at all times for motorists, school buses and emergency vehicles.

TxDOT will provide all construction oversight for the $1.3 million project which was funded by the city along with federal and state contributions. Hunter Industries, Ltd. of San Marcos was awarded the $866,875 construction contract with LAN, Inc. of San Marcos serving as the design engineer. Project completion is scheduled for mid-February 2011.
