Haitian amputee World Cup soccer team visits Texas State Friday

The Haitian Amputee World Cup Soccer team will play scrimmages at Texas State on Friday.

Texas State will be the first school in a series of hosts for the Haitian amputee World Cup Soccer team Friday. The team is touring the U.S. hoping to raise support to compete in international World Cup matches.

The Texas State women’s soccer team, as well as Texas State club soccer teams, will scrimmage the Haitians in a series of exhibition matches on at the West Campus soccer fields. Admission is $2 per person. The public is invited to attend. The funds will go toward the team’s World Cup travel expenses.

Haiti was devastated by an earthquake in January of this year. The quake took the lives of an estimated 230,000 people. The country is now facing a cholera epidemic in addition to the efforts to rebuild.

“Some of the men on this team are amputees due to that earthquake,” said Tori Riddles, president of the Adaptive Sports Club of Texas State (ASCOTS.) “We’re ecstatic to be able to help them out, but we need campus-wide support to make this event a success.”

The team has been met with good will and interest in its worldwide travels.
