A holiday favorite play, “Las Nuevas Tamaleras” (The New Tamale Makers), by Alicia Mena will be performed at Evans Auditorium on Saturday.
The Encore University Performing Arts Series at Texas State will feature a performance of “Las Nuevas Tameleras” (The New Tamale Makers) Saturday in Evans Audtorium (7:30 p.m.).
The one-act play, written and directed by San Antonio playwright Alicia Mena, is a charming and often comical story of three determined Chicanas and their attempt at making tamales for the first time. The play has become somewhat of a holiday tradition at Texas State.
The trio gets guidance from the spirits of two veteran tamale makers who appear and try to help the girls. Of course, the trouble is, everybody makes a “perfect” tamale in their own way, so even the spirits cannot agree on the procedure. The result is an amusing look at the generational differences and similarities in the women and traditions.
The cast includes Lorraine Pulido, Rita Duggan, Kinya Cano, Sonia Rodriguez and Monessa Maria Esquivel.
Tickets are $15 for reserved seating, $10 general admission and $5 for students. They may be purchased online or at the door on the night of the performance.
