Earp among Kyle city manager finalists

KYLE — The city council in Kyle has narrowed its search for a new city manager to four candidates who will be interviewed next week.

The candidates will tour the city on Nov. 15, then participate in a meet and greet session with city residents on the same day at Kyle City Hall. The meet and greet begins at 7 p.m.

On Nov. 16, the city council will interview the candidates in executive session.

Among the finalists is Interim City Manager James Earp, who has filled in since former City Manager Tom Mattis resigned in April. Earp started in Kyle as the assistant city manager in 2006.

The other three finalists are all presently working as city managers in Texas cities. Dale Brown has been the city manager in Palestine since 2005. Andres Garza has been the city manager in Wharton since 1994. Lanny Lambert has been the city manager in Leon Valley since 2007.

According to the U.S. Census population estimates for July 2009, Kyle is much larger than any of the other cities being managed by any of the finalists. Kyle had a population of 28,543. The population of Leon Valley was 11,020, the population of Palestine was 18,459 and the population of Wharton was 9,166.

The city received 38 applications for the city manager position from as far away as California, Chicago and New Jersey, according to city officials.
