The City of San Marcos will celebrate the opening of the Craddock Avenue Extension at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10 at the Bishop Street intersection with the new roadway. The public is invited to participate in the event.
Mayor Susan Narvaiz and the city council will open the new Craddock arterial that is approximately eight tenths of a mile and extends from Bishop Street across the Wonder World Extension to Purgatory Park Road.
“The Craddock extension provides our residents a direct link to our beautiful new parkway on Wonder World Drive, the only connector street between Old RM 12 and Hunter Road,” said Mayor Susan Narvaiz. “This connection will greatly enhance the improved mobility already achieved by Wonder World Drive extension.”
Wednesday’s Craddock celebration will mark completion of the $2 million project that includes a five-lane urban roadway from Bishop to Wonder World Drive with raised medians, illumination, sidewalks and native Texas landscaping. Extending across Wonder World Drive, Craddock becomes a three-lane roadway with wide shoulders that end at the entrance to Purgatory Park Road.
“Residents will enjoy the ten foot wide bike and pedestrian sidewalk on the east side of Craddock that leads to Purgatory Park Road and the 350 acres of green space purchased for the Wonder World Drive Extension project,” said Sabas Avila, P.E., Assistant Director of Public Services-Transportation and project manager. “We also designed the roadway so that drainage will flow to water-quality ponds along Wonder World Drive to utilize our resources and maintain environmentally sound best practices.”
KBR, Inc. of Austin designed the roadway with construction provided by J.C. Evans Construction Company of Leander. The project was part of the City’s capital improvements program and was funded through a combination of tax and revenue certificates of obligation issued in 2009.
Parking for the event will be provided on the Craddock Avenue Extension with access from Bishop Street and Craddock Avenue. Police officers will be on hand to direct traffic with handicap and VIP parking available. Overflow parking will be located along Bishop Street.
Following conclusion of the event, construction crews will remove the barricades and open the Craddock Avenue Extension to traffic.
