Texas State freshman Natalie Gardini made her starting debut in style during the last week, being named Goalkeeper of the Week by the Southland Conference Tuesday.
In her first two career starts, both on the road, Gardini allowed only one goal in 205 minutes guarding the net. The Bobcats beat McNeese State, 1-0, in overtime, and tied Lamar, 1-1. Gardini stopped 13 of 14 shots during the two games and, at 5-feet-11, intercepted numerous crossing passes.
The Bobcats are 3-1-1 in the Southland Conference and 9-5-1 overall. They are tied for third in the league with Southeastern Louisiana. Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) holds the top spot at 4-0-1, followed by Stephen F. Austin at 4-1-1.
The entire difference between third place and first for the Bobcats is a 1-0 loss at UTSA on Oct. 1. The Bobcats followed that game with two straight home field wins — a 1-0 decision over Central Arkansas on Oct. 8 and a 2-0 win against Northwestern State on Oct. 10. Serena Hines scored the Texas State goal against Central Arkansas, while Britney Curry and Jessica Etling scored for the Bobcats against Northwestern State.
On Oct. 15, the Bobcats went to Lamar and finished in a 1-1 tie. Lamar peppered shots at Gardini, who made 10 saves. Lauren Lewis scored the lone Texas State goal.
On Oct. 17, Texas State earned a dramatic 1-0 victory at McNeese State, with Curry scoring in the 95th minute. Curry, a senior, has scored 11 goals in 15 games, bringing her all-time Texas State career scoring record up to 48 goals.Email | Print
