Food bank talks turkey for needy families

The Turkeys Tackling Hunger campaign provides a Thanksgiving meal to economically distressed families.

The Hays County Food Bank is once again conducting its Turkeys Tackling Hunger campaign in order to give economically distressed families a Thanksgiving turkey dinner. A donation of $20 provides a turkey dinner with all the fixings for a Hays County family.

Donations may be made online at, or in person at the Hays County Food Bank, 220 Herndon Street, in San Marcos.

The “turkey box” contains one frozen turkey, canned corn, canned green beans, canned yams, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, instant mashed potatoes, a box of jello, a can of fruit cocktail and a loaf of bread.

Last year, the Hays County Food Bank helped more than 6,500 families have holiday meals through the Turkeys Tackling Hunger program.

Two CROP Hunger Walks are also scheduled to raise funds and awareness of hunger around the world.

The Buda/Kyle CROP walk will start at the Hays Communities YMCA, 465 Buda Sportsplex Drive, in Buda on Oct. 17. Registration starts at 1:30 p.m. The walk starts at 2 p.m.

The San Marcos CROP Hunger Walk will begin at the Fish Hatchery Building, 202 C.M.Allen Parkway, on March 6, 2011. Registration is at 1:30 p.m. The walk starts at 2 p.m.
