Most high school football teams will try to schedule a cupcake opponent for homecoming. No such luck for the San Marcos Rattlers.
Their homecoming opponent is a 4-0 Class 5A team, Anderson the only unbeaten team in an Austin district (District 15-5A) that includes Westlake, Austin and Bowie.
At 0-4, the Rattlers have suffered from early turnovers, which places stress on a defense that has allowed no fewer than 34 points in any game. The Rattlers lost, 41-6 last week to Corpus Christi Carroll. Anderson, a 42-6 winner at Seguin last week, has topped 40 points in three of its four games.
The two teams will meet Friday night (7:30 p.m.) at Bobcat Stadium.
In an unusual twist, San Marcos Academy (SMA) will play its fifth straight home game Friday night, when Texas Military Institute (TMI) visits for the TAPPS DII-3A opener for both teams. The Bears are 3-2 after a 48-15 loss to Louise last week. TMI is 1-4.
Hays will go on the road to Alamo Heights Friday night in a bid to establish contention in District 27-4A. The Rebels are 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the district after a 27-14 win against Lehman last week. Alamo Heights is 4-1 after crushing Lockhart, 31-6, in last week’s district opener.
Lehman (2-3, 0-1), will face an early bid to make playoff hopes real Friday night when New Braunfels Canyon goes to Bob Shelton Stadium. Canyon is 3-2 on the field, but officially 1-4 after forfeiting two wins for using an ineligible player.
Wimberley moved up to third in the statewide Associated Press Class 3A poll with its dramatic 31-30 win last week against Sealy. But the Texans also lost star running back Dennis Smith, a Texas A&M pledge who fractured a toe in his right foot during the game. Smith will miss the remainder of the regular season after rushing for 732 yards and scoring 18 touchdowns during the Texans’ 5-0 start. However, the Texans shouldn’t have any trouble, with or without Smith, when Bandera visits Friday night. Bandera is 0-5.
Dripping Springs goes on the road to Vandegrift, a first-year varsity, Friday night. Dripping Springs is 2-3 overall and 0-1 in District 25-4A. Vandegrift is 3-2 and 0-1 after a 59-3 loss last week at Cedar Park.
