First LWV debate to take place Monday

The first of two general election debates sponsored by the San Marcos Area League of Women Voters (LWV) is scheduled for Oct. 4 at the San Marcos Activity Center (7 p.m.).

The debate will feature San Marcos city council and mayoral candidates, as well as candidates for the District 25 Texas senate seat, the Edwards Aquifer Authority District 11 and State Board of Education District 5. League member Brenda Smith will serve as debate moderator.

The LWV will put on a second debate on Oct. 11 at the San Marcos Activity Center (7 p.m.) to address county and state races. Among the candidates on hand will be those running for state representative District 45, Hays County judge, Hays County commissioner precincts 2 and 4, Hays County sheriff, County Court at Law, No. 1 judge, and 428th Judicial District judge. Candidates for district clerk, county clerk and county surveyor have been invited to address the audience in a forum style segment of the debate.  The Oct. 11 program moderator will be league member Dorothy Evans.

The local League’s Voters Guide, which will cover city and county general election candidates, will be distributed at both local debates. It also is posted below.

The deadline to register to vote in the election is Oct. 4. The LWV has made arrangements to accept voter registration cards at the Oct. 4 debate.

Early voting for the Nov. 2 general election starts Oct. 18 and continues through Oct. 29. In order to vote by mail, ballot applications must be received by Oct. 26.
