San Marcos Cemetery’s run, walk set for Saturday

Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery’s seventh annual “From Here To Eternity” 5-K Walk/Run starts at 8 a.m. Oct. 2 at the corner of Blanco and Hutchison Streets by the Lamar School Annex.

The race entry fee is $20. Current Texas State University-San Marcos students will receive a $3 discount with a current student ID. Day of race registration will begin on site at 7 a.m. Awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m.

The “From Here To Eternity” 5-K Walk/Run, which benefits the Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery’s commitment to promoting the resources, services and historic significance of the historic city cemetery. Last year’s run attracted a record number of 97 competitors.

Forms for on-line registration are up on both the Friends and the San Marcos Runners Club websites, as well as the popular Runtex website. Runners – and walkers – compete in age and gender divisions in the annual fundraiser, which is staged by the San Marcos Runners Club.

The challenging 5-K course begins at the San Marcos CISD’s Lamar Annex on the corner of Blanco and Hutchison Streets and continues on residential streets that vary from flat to hilly, and loops through the San Marcos City Cemetery before finishing back at Lamar. Race categories are divided in age and gender divisions. Age divisions include 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over.

Race chair is Dianne Pape. Race experts David Alexander and the San Marcos Runners Club will again be officiating the walk/run.

Delightfully unique, handmade tombstone trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female finishers, the top male and female masters finishers (over 40 years of age) and to the top three male and female finishers in each age division. On the day of the race, creatively designed tee-shirts will be presented to the first 75 registered participants.
According to Pape, sponsors on board to date for this year’s race include Thomason Funeral Home, Frost National Bank, Ed and Bonnie Longcope, Pennington Funeral Home and Jane Hughson.
