Opening Door Dance Theatre celebrates 26th anniversary

The Opening Door Dance Theatre at Texas State University will celebrate its 26th anniversary with 7:30 p.m. performances Sept. 23-24.

The performances will be held in Evans Auditorium on campus, and feature the work of six choreographers, including guest choreographer Cari Cunningham of Reno, Nev.

“Cunningham has set an 11-minute dance on 13 Texas State dancers,” said Michelle Nance, an associate professor in the division of dance. “The dancers don head lamps, making the beams of light the focal point of the dance.”

The Opening Door Dance Theatre, founded in 1984 by Karen Earl, Sandy Rodriguez and LeAnne Smith, is the resident professional dance company within the division of dance at Texas State. It features faculty, alumni and guest artist choreography sets on Texas State dancers.

“In the program you will experience a slap-stick dance about hair; an elegant, abstract ballet; a quirky group-dance utilizing energetic tosses through space; and a poignant dance, entitled “Letting Go” which showcases human relationships and vulnerability,” Nance said.
