The Texas State volleyball team is on the road for one more weekend before making its home debut next Tuesday. The Bobcats began their season last weekend by winning two of three matches at the Hofstra/Asics Invitational in Hempstead, NY.
The Bobcats lost their opener in five games to Missouri State, but came back with three-game sweeps over Hofstra and Canisius.
Oddly enough the Bobcats came agonizingly close to beating Missouri State in three sets, winning the first two, then losing the third, 25-21. Missouri State took the fourth set, 25-17, to tie the match at two sets each, then cruised to a 15-6 win in the tiebreaker.
Matti Schumacher led the Bobcats with 15 kills and AJ Watlington added 12.
The Bobcats came back later that day with a three-set win against Hofstra. The Bobcats won by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-12.
Freshman Preslie Alexander made 10 kills with only one error, while freshman Amari Deardorff posted eight kills.
The Bobcats finished out their tournament with a three-set sweep of Canisius by scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-19. Six Texas State players finished with six or more kills, led by Schumacher with eight.
Texas State will play this weekend at the Southern Methodist Invitational, set for matches on Friday against California-Davis (11 a.m.) and Southern Methodist (7:30 p.m.), then a Saturday match against Texas Tech (noon).
The Bobcats will play their home opener at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday against Prairie View A&M at Strahan Coliseum.
