When San Marcos High School (SMHS) junior Sam Heaton returned to school this week, he was prepared for the year ahead with some select training he received over the summer. Heaton attended the University of Texas Butler School School of Music Young Artist Program’s rigorous seven-week course in opera, along with SMHS graduate Katy Whitbeck.
Heaton has something to sing about with his many honors already collected throughout the 2009-2010 school year, including the medal for Outstanding Performer at the UIL competition at the state solo ensemble contest in May. He was one of only 231 students who attained the honor in a field of 22,000 musicians who performed at the competition.
While looking forward to the SMHS choir programs he is involved in this year, Heaton is particularly anticipating a performance in Athens, Greece. He has been invited to join the Texas State University choir when it performs Carl Orff’s Camina Burana at the Olympic Stadium in the summer of 2011.Email | Print
