San Marcos Academy’s (SMA) Bear Club welcomed Don Coryell and Charlie Reeve of the Texas State’s athletic department to its monthly networking meeting Thursday at Quail Creek Country Club in San Marcos.

“We are very pleased to have such well respected Bobcat officials come to the Bear Club meeting this month,” said SMA athletic director Toby Wade.

Coryell is Texas State’s associate athletic director for external operations, responsible for marketing and promotional campaigns, ticket operations, facilities, university licensing, sponsorships and community relations. He also is the athletic department administrator for Texas State’s soccer, men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf programs and the Strutters.

“We have let conferences know our intentions to hopefully be able to move to up to the next division,” Coryell said about the university’s hope of moving to the top level of college football. “We have been very public with our intentions, and are going to continue to prepare ourselves for the possible move up … We are excited about getting athletics where we need to be and hopefully one day being able to have 28,000-30,000 fans at home games.”

Coryell also talked about ongoing improvements and additions to Texas State athletic facilities, including the rebuilt baseball and football stadiums.

Reeve is in his third season as the running backs coach at Texas State.

“We have a lot of great things going on at Texas State,” Reeve said. “Our athletes just finished working out for the first time on the new artificial turf (at Bobcat Stadium). September 1, we are going to start breaking ground on the new track … I tell recruits they are coming into the university during a great time, not only on the athletics side but the school as a whole.”

The SMA Bear Club consists of representatives from about 70 local businesses in San Marcos and surrounding communities who volunteer their time to help support the schools’s athletic program. Members and guests meet monthly to share ideas, contacts and business referrals. More information on Bear Club opportunities is available on the Academy website at www.smabears.org.
