County to hold veterans task force meetings

STAFF REPORT

Hays County is sponsoring meetings for veterans and their dependents to share information gathered by a County Veteran Task Force.

The meeting is scheduled for May 20, at 6 p.m. at Miller Middle School Cafeteria, 301 Foxtail Run, San Marcos. County and city representatives are expected to include Hays County Precinct 1 Commissioner Debbie Ingalsbe (D-San Marcos), Precinct 2 Commissioner Jeff Barton (D-Kyle), Precinct 3 Commissioner Will Conley (R-Wimberley) and Precinct 4 Commissioner Karen Ford (D-Dripping Springs), San Marcos City Councilmember Fred Terry and interim veterans services officer of Hays County Mike Mendoza. A second meeting organized by Barton will be held at the VFW Post in Kyle on May 27 at 7 p.m.

The task force, appointed by the commissioners court last winter, offered recommendations which would allow Hays County to further improve efficiencies and effectiveness of programs that serve veterans living in Hays County without duplicating services already provided at the state or federal level. Hays County commissioners seek to share those findings with area veterans and gather additional input.

“There’s a host of services available to veterans and their qualified dependents from federal, state and local sources,” said Mendoza. “We want to make sure that our veterans understand what those services are and how to access the services and programs they’re entitled to.”

One of the topics of discussion will be medical transportation to and from the Audie Murphy Veterans Hospital in San Antonio. Unlike a number of other counties, Hays County currently offers shuttle transportation for veterans with medical appointments at the VA hospital.
