The San Marcos High School (SMHS) speech and debate team returned from regional competition in Huntsville with the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Region III championship.
The team finished with three qualifiers for state and two alternates. This is the first regional title for the team. The team is now in preparation for the state tournament which takes place in Austin May Thursday through Saturday.
SMHS Seniors Irene Morse and Kelly Mathis took first and second place, respectively, for informative speaking in the extemporaneous speaking category and are now headed to state. Morse won the state title last year and is hoping to repeat the performance.
Senior Henry Finch was awarded second place for persuasive speaking in the extemporaneous speaking category and will represent SMHS in the event at state. Finch also took fourth place in the Lincoln-Douglas Debate and will be an alternate in the category. Finch will compete at the state meet for the second year in a row.
Julie Munoz, a senior, took fourth place in prose interpretation and will be an alternate for the state meet.
Junior Keegan Taylor earned eighth place for informative speaking in the extemporaneous speaking category and helped seal the deal for the regional championship.
