STAFF REPORT
The San Marcos area youth music education groups of Texas State, the Hill Country Youth Chorus and Mariachi Infantil, will perform a special concert at Evans Auditorium Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the event is a non-perishable food donation to the San Marcos Area Food Bank. Boxes will be located outside of the auditorium for the donations.
The Texas State Youth Mariachi program began in 2006. Students study instrumental and vocal techniques from skilled Mariachi musicians and teachers. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade can choose to play either violin or guitar. Students in grade six through grade eight can choose violin, trumpet, vihuela, guitar or gitarron. Mariachi Infantil is under the direction of Texas State music faculty member John Lopez.
The Hill Country Youth Chorus was founded in 2005. The chorus features the voices of students, ages seven through 16, from San Marcos and the surrounding communities in Hays County.
“The program serves boys and girls from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, with a curriculum that equips these young artists with the musical skills that enable them to seek the highest artistic standards in performances of challenging music,” said youth chorus leader and Texas State faculty member Lynn Brinckmeyer.
