The Hays County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) has arrested a suspected identity thief after receiving a call of possible credit card abuse from Cabela’s in Buda.

Troy Jay Bird, 41, of Corpus Christi, is charged with fraudulent use and possession of identifying information, possession of a controlled substance, and three counts of tampering with a government record.

Bond was set at $3,000 for the controlled substance charge, a Class A misdemeanor. For the possession of identifying information charge, a state jail felony, bond was set at $5,000. For each count of tampering with a government record, a second degree felony, bond was set at $5,000 for each charge. The bonding total came to $23,000.

Bird was released Wednesday after posting bond.

The HCSO received the call of possible credit card abuse from Cabela’s at approximately 2:40 p.m. Monday afternoon. Deputies stopped a green Ford F250 towing a white trailer, matching a description of the vehicle used in the offense, not far from Cabela’s.

The driver produced a Texas drivers license, which the deputy thought to be fraudulent. Deputies would later locate other forms of identification, each bearing a different name, in the suspect’s possession.

With assistance from Cabelas Asset Protection, deputies learned that the driver had made purchases using several fraudulent credit cards. The eventually was identified as Troy Jay Bird. He was arrested, and his vehicle and trailer were impounded.

The HCSO Criminal Investigations Division and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal Investigations Division are following up on this case. A search warrant was executed on Bird’s trailer and instruments used in the making of fraudulent identifications were seized.

The investigation is ongoing.
