For the second straight year, the San Marcos High School speech and debate team won the University Interscholastic League district championship, racking up more points than all their competitors combined.
Of 15 San Marcos students to compete at district level, 12 qualified to compete at the regional meet April 23-24 in Huntsville. The winners there will compete at state competition.
Senior Irene Morse took top honors in Persuasive Speaking, defending her District Title from last year when she went on to become state champion. Senior Kelley Mathis will join Morse at regionals with her second place win; senior John Smith finished fifth.
In Informative Speaking, the team swept all three regional qualifying spots. Junior Keegan Taylor placed third, freshman Frankie Torres took second, and senior Henry Finch is the district champion.
Interpretation events also scored big at the tournament. Senior Julie Munoz is the district champion in Prose, with Ben Painton joining her at Regionals with a second place finish. Junior Selena Selvera finished fifth. In Poetry, senior Kristine Staggs qualified for regionals with a third place finish, and junior Brittany Howard qualified in Second Place.
The Lincoln Douglas Debate event was another clean sweep for the team, as they took all three Regional qualifying positions. Sophomore Cameron Herber took third place; Morse won second; and Finch claimed the district title.
The speech and debate team is coached by the sister-brother team of Lacye Odam and C.J. Odam.Email | Print
