Texas State scored twice in the ninth inning Sunday for a 4-2 win in the rubber game of its three-game softball series at McNeese State.
Anna Hernandez, who finished the day three-for-five for the Bobcats, led off the ninth with a double, moved to third on Chandler Hall’s sacrifice and scored when the Cowgirls muffed a fly ball to left by Haley Lemons, who wound up on second base. A single by McKenzie Baack moved pinch runner Leah Boatright to third, then Boatright scored on bunt by Jenna Emery.
Anna Marie Taylor claimed the win, her fourth in a row, pitching 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief to close out the game.
The Bobcats split their two games at McNeese State on Saturday, losing the first, 3-1, but winning the second, 5-1.
McNeese State’s Marissa Koetting hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning of the first game against Hall, the Texas State starter who took the loss and fell to 6-6. Hall struck out four hitters. Emery homered in the seventh for the Bobcats’ only run.
The Bobcats scored five runs in the fifth inning of the second game. A two-run homer by Hernandez, her fifth of the year, triggered the rally. The Bobcats tacked up three more runs in the inning with four hits, a walk and a hit batter.
Taylor picked up the win with five strikeouts.
Texas State improved to 11-12 overall and 7-2 in the Southland Conference, where they are tied for the lead with Stephen F. Austin. Texas-Arlington is right behind them at 6-2, followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, McNeese State and Nicholls State at 5-4.
The Bobcats will go to Texas Tech for a Tuesday double header before returning to Bobcat Field for a weekend series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.Email | Print
