ACC Mobile Go Center slated at library

The Austin Community College (ACC) Mobile Go Center bus, which brings information on higher education opportunities for Texans, will be at the San Marcos Public Library, 625 East Hopkins Street, on March 22 and 29 from 4-7 p.m. to answer questions and help fill out entrance paperwork and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for potential students.

The ACC Mobile Go Center brings college-related information and assistance directly to students and their families. The trailer is equipped with satellite technology and laptop computers, allowing future college students to explore websites designed to assist with the college prep process.

Initially funded with an AT&T grant, there are currently 18 Mobile Go Centers, which were started by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and the College for All Texans Foundation to allow college and university advisors to assist with the often intimidating process of applying for college and financial aid.

The goal of the College for All Texans campaign is to support the state’s “Closing the Gaps” efforts to attract an additional 630,000 Texans to colleges and universities by 2015.

The THECB has many initiatives in place to support this goal since the beginning of the century after demographic reports stated that Texas was losing ground in its ability to create an educated work force.

“If participation and graduation rates remain low, the poverty rate in Texas will increase by three percent and the average Texas household income will decline by $3,000 in constant dollars by 2030,” said Steve Murdock, Chief Demographer for the Texas State Data Center and Office of the State Demographer in San Antonio.
