Johnson named to All-Southland Conference third team

Texas State junior forward Cameron Johnson was named an All-Southland Conference Third-Team selection after helping the Bobcats finish the regular season with a 15-15 overall record and a 9-7 SLC mark in 2009-10.

Johnson led the Bobcats and ranked eighth among SLC scoring leaders with 8.3 points and was fifth among the league’s top rebounding leaders with a 7.9 average as a junior. The all-conference selections are determined by a combined vote of men’s basketball coaches and sports information directors

UT Arlington guard Marquez Haynes was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, while Sam Houston State forward Gilberto Clavell was named the Newcomer of the Year and UTSA guard Melvin Johnson III received Freshman of the Year honors. Sam Houston State head coach Bob Marlin was named the Southland’s Coach of the Year.

Joining Haynes on the First Team were Texas A&M-Corpus Christi guard Kevin Palmer, Nicholls guard Anatoly Bose and Sam Houston State guards Ashton Mitchell and Corey Allmond.

Joining Clavell on the Second Team were Southeastern forward/center Patrick Sullivan, , Stephen F. Austin guard Eddie Williams, Lamar forward Justin Nabors and UTSA guard Devin Gibson.

Joining Texas State’s Johnson as Third-Team choices Texas A&M-Corpus Christi forward Demond Watt, Northwestern State forward Will Pratt, McNeese guard Patrick Richard and Stephen F. Austin forward Walt Harris.

All three all-conference teams are listed below.

The 2010 State Farm Southland Conference Basketball Tournament will be played this week at the Leonard E. Merrell Center. Four men’s quarterfinal games will be played Wednesday beginning at noon with semifinal games Thursday at 6:05 p.m. and approximately 8:33 p.m. The championship game will be played Saturday at 3:05 p.m. and televised on ESPN2. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster or at the Merrell Center box office.
