CASA and Moe team up for fundraising run

022010casamoeSTAFF REPORT

Local race director Moe Johnson and Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) have combined their fundraising race events, bringing together the Speak Up For Kids CASA 5k and 1k fun runs with the Austin Radiological Association (ARA) Moe’s Better Half Marathon, which will take place on Sunday.

The half-marathon runners will take off at 7 a.m. from the Tanger Outlet Center to a rolling, certified course with some hilly challenges. The CASA 5k is not certified and those runners will start at 7:15 a.m. on an out-and-back taking place over the first part of the marathon course. The 1K is for kids starting at 7:30 a.m.

The half marathon will be chip-timed. Chip timing is a system that requires the athletes to wear lightweight chips identifying them as they cross over electronic mats. The 5k runners will have the choice of running competitively or for fun.

The 1k, for kids 12 or younger, has a fee of $10. There is no late fee for the 5k and 1k fun runs. The half-marathon will not accept race day registration.

Awards will be presented from the half-marathon. The categories include the male and female Overall, masters (ages 40-49), senior masters (50-59) and grand masters (60 and over) champions, and the top three male and female finishers in each age division of five-year age groups.

The competitive 5k will award the overall male and female winners, the male and female masters winners and the top three male and female finishers in each division.

There are no awards for the 5k fun run, but all the kids who complete the 1k fun run will receive commemorative gifts.

The awards presentation will take place at 9:30 a.m.

Everyone who participates in the half-marathon will receive a short-sleeved high-tech shirt, a pen and a ceramic coffee cup. Each participant in the 5k and 1k runs will receive a short-sleeved T-shirt.

  1. A quick correction. Because of the response the race for the half marathon will have day of race registration. Registration can also be completed at the packet pick up areas on Saturday (Tanger Outlet from 10 until 5). With over 275 runners already entered in the half it looks like a fun event. The CASA 5k will get a big turnout on day of race and will probably have close to 200 entrants. Come on out and join a great crowd either as a runner or a volunteer.
