STAFF REPORT

Tuesday is the big day in a number of contested political races across Hays County as the polls open until 7 p.m. in the Republican and Democratic primary elections.

Based on the early voting counts in both primaries, this year’s turnout should smash the levels from the 2006, the last primary election from an off-presidential year.

Republicans turned out 3,410 early voters in Hays County this year, while the Democratic early count was 2,607 when the polls opened at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Those numbers stand to end up a little smaller because, said Hays County Elections Administrator Joyce Cowan, the total include all mail ballots that have been requested. The county sent out 692 mail and overseas ballots on the Democratic side and has received back about 500. On the Republican side, the county has sent out 215 such ballots and received back about 110.

In the 2006 primaries, the Democrats turned out a total 2,745 voters combined for early voting and Election Day. The Republican count came to 4,041.
