On the very same day some San Marcos High School salsa and jazz band members competed at the District 18 University Interscholastic League (UIL) solo and ensemble competition, they also performed earlier that morning at the Hill Country Jazz Festival.
On Feb. 6, the two bands played for some of the finest jazz educators in the country at the festival and won several outstanding musician awards.
Despite the early hour, Mark “Gabe” DeLeon (jazz), Nathan Hicks (jazz), Kasey Campa (salsa), Robert Acosta (salsa), Agustin Martinez (salsa), Luisa Ruge-Jones (salsa), Cameron Valenta (salsa) and Brian Rodriguez (salsa) were all recognized with honors.
Juan Cavazos directed the salsa band and Kelly Rushfeldt conducted the jazz band during the festival.
Said Cavazos, “Special congratulations go out to Gabe DeLeon, Luisa Ruge-Jones, and Kasey Campa who excelled at the two events held that same day.”
