Two candidates have thrown their hats in for the District 1 at-large city council race set for May 8 in Kyle.

Jason Welch, a three-year resident of Kyle, announced himself as an opponent of debt. After building more than a dozen infrastructure projects attempting to support rapid growth in Kyle, the city is $73 million in debt.

“The City of Kyle deserves better than to have a council that rubber stamps the wishes of the city manager,” Welch said. “It needs a person that will ask the tough questions, and sticks to principle.”

Welch holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Utah and has spent the last 13 years in sales and sales management. He was a member of the U.S. Army reserves for 10 years.

Diane Hervol, a member of the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) and a recent graduate of the Kyle Leadership Academy, also has announced a run for Place 1. Hervol has lived in Kyle for seven years and worked since 1993 as a legal administrator.

Hervol said she is concerned to create more viable solutions for local employment in Kyle, while also addressing the city’s transportation needs. Hervol said she supports bringing Austin Community College (ACC) to Hays CISD (which includes Kyle). She added that “the voice of the people” must be heard as the city contemplates adding existing amenities, such as a recreation center, and that she would work towards “finding viable financing solutions for necessary future expenditures.”

The present Place 1 holder, Councilmember Michelle Lopez, resigned last month seat to run for mayor. Lopez lost on Feb. 13 to Councilmember Lucy Johnson in that race, but will remain on the council until her term expires with the May election. Lopez has not indicated if she will take another run for her seat.
