CTMC celebrates National Heart Month with seminar

National Heart Month has inspired Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) to recognize the cause of heart health with several initiatives designed to create awareness of the issue.

One initiative is CTMC’s  free seminar Wednesday, “Act in Time,” addressing the risk factors for heart attack and advising on how to minimize  them.  The program was developed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute with the goal of preparing people to recognize the early warning signs of a heart attack and quickly respond quickly to them.  The program will go from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The seminar also seeks to help participants learn ways to reduce future heart health problems. Registration for the seminar is available at at “education and events,” or by calling CTMC’s Institute for Health Living at (512) 753-3622.

Another way CTMC has focused on National Heart Month is by hosting the kick off for the  American Heart Association’s annual San Marcos Heart Walk in its community classroom earlier this month. The walk will take place at Bobcat Stadium on March 20. The 40 team captains for the walk met at CTMC to initiate fund-raising efforts and hear Dr. Faisal Syed, CTMC cardiologist, talk about heart care.

“The truth is that most heart disease is preventable, yet it is still the number one killer of men and women in the world,” Syed said. “Through support of the Heart Walk, we are helping the AHA continue to spread the word on how to prevent heart disease from the start.”

Additionally, CTMC has an online health library featuring heart health topics. It is available to the public by clicking the “Health Library” tab at and searching the health encyclopedia.
