The annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) banquet was held at Texas State earlier this month, with three San Marcos High School (SMHS) attendees awarded honors.
The “Most Spirited” honor went to SMHS softball player Jackie Cantu. Assistant Cross County Coach Rosalinda Ramirez was awarded “Most Valuable Coach,” and Gina Misiaszek of the SMHS volleyball team received the “Academic Achievement/All-Around Athlete” honor.
SMHS attendees included the girls cross country team, led by Coaches Ramirez and Eloy Collazo. Also in attendance, in addition to various Texas State athletes, were the SMHS softball team, led by Coach Cathy McBride, and the SMHS volleyball team, led by Ramirez.
This was the 24th annual banquet for the NGWSD, originally founded in 1987 to commemorate the life of Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman, who died in 1986 of Marfan’s Syndrome. Since the day’s inception, it has expanded to not only recognize the past, but to acknowledge current achievements and the positive influence of sports participation for women in sports.
The theme for 2010’s NGWSD is “Stay Strong, Play On.” The day also seeks to create awareness of the ongoing endeavor to create equality and access for women in sports.Email | Print
