San Marcos CISD continues dialogue series

Continuing the public dialogues initiated by San Marcos CISD in 2007, the 2010 community dialogues/workshops on education are scheduled for Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 from 6-9:30 p.m. in the San Marcos High School cafeteria.

The E3 Alliance, SOAR (Seeking Opportunities, Achieving Results) and San Marcos CISD will sponsor the series.

Forum participants, as in years before, will be divided into small groups with trained moderators. After group discussions, the ideas will be recorded and shared with the local school district and with regional groups in the greater Austin area.

The focus of the 2010 dialogues is “Workforce Approaches for the 21st Century,” centering on the burgeoning global marketplace and ideas of firm educational foundations, academic achievement and what Central Texas communities are doing to prepare students to be a qualified workforce.

“It is necessary to remember that the local schools serve the community now and in the future,” San Marcos CISD Superintendent Patti Shafer said. “Therefore, it is important that the school district and trustees receive input from the citizens as to perceived needs and directions that the community would have us go.”

In the fall of 2007, the first community public dialogues were held in cooperation with the E3 Alliance. The purpose was to identify strengths and weakness in the school district and help create solutions. From those discussions came various initiatives within San Marcos CISD and some community developments. One of the results was the forming of the SOAR partnership, which has held local education fairs, conducted college workshops, held bookdrives for pre-schoolers and more.

Early registration is encouraged due to limited seating. To ask questions about the event or to pre-register, e-mail or call (512) 393-6744.

Starting at 5:15 p.m. a light supper of pizza and a drink will be provided to all participants. Free childcare will be provided for children who are no longer in diapers.
