Kyle to hold memorial for Peña

STAFF REPORT

Hays CISD and Kyle officials are holding a memorial Friday morning for deceased U.S. Army Captain Paul Peña, who died in the line of duty last week in Afghanistan.

Peña’s mother, Cecilia Peña, has taught music for 25 years at Kyle Elementary School in Hays CISD.

Kyle Elementary Principal Elaine Meyer, Kyle Mayor Mike Gonzalez, and Kyle/Buda VFW Post have organized the local memorial ceremony, which will begin Friday at 8 a.m. at Kyle Elementary School.

Kyle Elementary School staff and students will assemble for the memorial ceremony.  Gonzalez will present a proclamation honoring Peña, followed by remarks from Kyle/Buda VFW Post Commander Rick Riel. After Riel speaks, the flags at the school will be lowered to half-mast.

A memorial will be set-up at Kyle Elementary School to allow citizens to leave messages of support for Cecelia Peña.

The Governor’s office has issued a declaration for flags in San Marcos and Hays County to fly at half-mast Friday in remembrance of the 27-year old San Marcos native, who was killed in combat on Jan. 19. Peña is to be buried Friday.

Family will receive friends 10 a.m. Friday at St. John’s the Evangelist, 128 South Audubon Drive in San Antonio, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., with Father Stuart Juleen officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Peña’s body returned to San Marcos Tuesday after landing at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio. Hundreds of people lined city streets as a motorcade with Peña’s body drove through San Marcos.
