Halfway through the district season, the San Marcos High School boys basketball team appears to cruising towards a playoff berth, while the girls team, a little further into the season, has a hill to climb.
Two straight losses in District 17-4A during the last week have done little damage to the Rattlers boys team, as those losses came to the top two teams in the district. With their losses of 62-52 to Manor and 81-59 to Del Valle, the Rattlers now are 4-2 in the district, trailing only those two teams. Del Valle is 6-0 in the league, while Manor is 5-1.
The Rattlers are 14-12 overall
The top four teams from the district go to the playoffs, and, it appears, the Rattlers have little chance of dropping into fifth place. All four district teams below the Rattlers are below .500 in league play. Following the Rattlers are Hays (2-4), Lehman (2-4), Elgin (2-4) and Lockhart (0-6).
As it turns out, those teams with losing records are the next four on the San Marcos schedule, starting with a game Tuesday night against Elgin at the Snake Pit.
In the loss against Manor, the Rattlers didn’t have a defensive answer to L.D. Williams, who torched them for 30 points. Colin Hart led the Rattlers in that game with 14 points.
Del Valle led the Rattlers for almost the entire game last Friday night at the Snake Pit, increasing its leads from 13-12 after one quarter to 29-21 after two and 60-41 after three. Josef Cortez led a balanced Del Valle attack with 16 points.
The San Marcos girls team is 2-5 in the district, holding fifth place and needing to move up at least one more to make the playoffs. Hays leads District 17-4A at 8-0, followed by Del Valle (7-1), Elgin (4-4) and Manor (4-4). After San Marcos comes Lehman (2-6), then Lockhart (0-7).
The Rattlers will next play Tuesday at Elgin.Email | Print
