Doggett nominates SMHS students to service academies

Two San Marcos High School (SMHS) seniors have been nominated by U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) for prestigious appointments to the nation’s military academies. Henry Finch was nominated to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis and Aidan Dietz has been nominated for United States Army Academy at West Point.

Finch has accepted admission to attend the Naval Academy. Number one in his class, Finch  is active at SMHS and in the community. He worked with the San Marcos Housing Authority organizing a children’s clothing drive as an Eagle Scout project. The drive brought in thousands of pounds of clothes.

He is also a pianist and a member of the varsity cross country team. He received  his letter of assurance from the Naval Academy, where he will attend in the fall.

Nominee for West Point Aidan Dietz seems to be pursuing the family business. Aidan’s Father is a Lieutenant Colonel with the Texas Army National guard and has served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Aidan is in the process of completing his Eagle Scout project at Hays-Caldwell Women’s Shelter, He is also a varsity swimmer for SMHS.

Dietz’s mother, Lucy “Elly” Del Prado Dietz, is an attorney with Duvall Gurnning & Dietz. Sharon, his sister, is a junior at the University of Texas where she is a Big 12 rowing champion.
