The San Marcos Area League of Women Voters will hold its 22nd annual Texas Wine Tasting fundraiser 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 at the Quail Creek Country Club, 2701 Texas 21.
Wines from Llano Estacado Winery in Lubbock will be featured at this year’s event, which is again a key fundraiser for the League’s voter education program. Six Llano Estacado wines will be offered.
Wine tasting tickets are available from any League member for $20. Tickets will also be available at the door on Jan. 28.
The League’s wine tasting committee is co-chaired by Douglas Holcomb and Kaylene Ray. Holcomb and Ray, along with other committee volunteers, are working diligently to put together another impressive silent auction. Last year’s auction items were a major hit with wine tasters and more great auction items are anticipated this year.
Catering the League’s 22nd annual wine tasting will once again be All Occasions Catering of Seguin, a full service catering company that has been in operation for more than 25 years. The company has catered events throughout the South Texas area, including last year’s League wine tasting.
In a state with a growing wine industry, Llano Estacado is the state’s largest, producing wines of world class quality, and taking the lead in introducing not just Texans, but the entire world, to the great wines made in Texas. Texas is the fifth largest wine producing state in the U.S. It is also one of the state’s oldest wineries, founded in 1976. Llano Estacado released its first 1,300 bottles of wine in 1988.
Proceeds from the wine tasting help fund the publication of the League’s local voters guides, as well as expenses incurred by the candidates debates and meet-and-greet receptions. Funding is particularly important for the League’s 2009-2010 activity year.
With one debate, one voters guide and one election down this past fall, the League has two more to go this spring. The primary debate is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the San Marcos Activity Center. The primary-focused voters guide will be published on Feb. 14. Early voting starts Feb. 16 and runs through Feb. 26. The 2010 primary election is March 2.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters does not support any particular candidate or party.
Open to men and women, the League’s guiding principles focus on belief in the representative form of government and individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States. Another guiding principal is that “democratic government depends upon the informed and active participation of its citizens and requires that governmental bodies protect the citizen’s right to know by giving adequate notice of proposed actions, holding open meetings and making public records accessible.”
The centerpiece of the League’s voter education program is the popular non-partisan voters guide published prior to each local election. The San Marcos area relies on the League to provide voters with non-partisan information on elections and issues. The San Marcos League will host the state convention in April of 2010.
