ARLINGTON — Ryan White and Tony Bishop each scored 14 points to lead Texas State to 64-60 victory over UT Arlington in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
UTA held a 36-39 halftime lead but that was erased early in the second half as the Bobcats started the half with a 12-2 run in the first five minutes to take a 41-38 lead that they would not give up the remainder of the game.
The Mavericks had three opportunities to tie or take the lead late in the game but Brandon Long missed two three-pointers and Dwight Gentry missed another all in the last two and a half minutes.
Both teams committed 28 turnovers which Texas State turned into 15 points and UTA into 16 points. There were also 59 fouls called in the game which resulted in 53 free throws being shot between the two teams.
Marquez Haynes led three Mavericks in double figures with 18 points which is five below his average of 23 per game.
With the loss UTA drops to 7-6 and 0-1 in conference while Texas State improves to 7-8 and 1-0.
