Phoenix student awarded grant

Sergio Ruiz, a November graduate of San Marcos High School’s Phoenix Academy, was recently awarded a grant through the Gary Job Corps that will allow him to attend St. Philip’s College in San Antonio.

At the conclusion of the two-year program at the college, Ruiz will earn an Associates of Applied Sciences degree as well as Welder/Welding Technologist and other certifications. St. Philip’s is a part of the Alamo Colleges system.

Ruiz participated in the SMHS/Gary Job Corps dual enrollment program that allowed him to receive his academic training at Phoenix Academy and his technical training in welding at the Gary Job Corps through the School of Construction and Manufacturing.

His instructor at Gary was Lee Gomez. Ruiz also worked with Gary Counselor Isadoro Delgado and Phoenix counselor Amy Lyles.

  1. Could SMCISD’s Public Information office do a follow up press release in a couple of months/weeks to update the community on this Students status and progress at St. Philip’s?

    Congratulations on getting into ACC, but I would like to know whether or not Phoenix prepares them for a post secondary education…
