Taking a big lead in the first half Sunday, the Texas State women’s basketball team dispatched Our Lady of the Lake, 62-47, at Strahan Coliseum, giving the Bobcats a split in their two weekend games.
The Bobcats lost, 65-45, on Dec. 18 at Texas El-Paso (UTEP). The Bobcats now are 4-6 this season.
The Bobcats struggled to get in front of Our Lady of the Lake, holding only a 21-17 advantage with 5:02 left in the first half. However, the Bobcats scored 12 straight points before the end of the half, then scored 10 of the first 13 points of the second half to command a 43-20 lead with 14:09 left in the game.
Diamond Ford led the Bobcats with 12 points, followed by Victoria Davis with 10. Our Lady of the Lake’s Elizabeth Hampton scored 15 points to lead all scorers.
Texas State shot only 27.3 percent (15 for 55) in the loss at UTEP. The game went much like the Our Lady of the Lake game, except in reverse. Playing on the road, the Bobcats kept to within 20-17, but UTEP tacked up a 16-3 and went to halftime with a 36-20 lead, then scored the first seven points of the second half to make it 43-20.
Texas State’s Aimee Hilburn and UTEP’s Jareica Hughes each put up 11 points to lead all scorers. Timika Williams also reached double figures for UTEP with 10 points.
The Bobcats are off until Jan. 2, when they play at Baylor (7 p.m.).
