The Texas State Bass Cats team of David Cosner and Jay McCollum won second place and $25,000 last month at the Forrest L. Wood (FLW) Texas Regional Fishing Championship in Fort Worth.
Cosner is a sophomore business marketing major from Austin and McCollum is a senior agricultural business major from Athens.
The Bass Cats competed at Lake Sibley against 40 other universities, including Baylor, Texas A&M, Louisiana State and Texas. The Bass Cats reeled in 13 bass weighing 27 pounds, nine ounces.
The Bass Cats organization was established last year Cosner, the current president. The group has 27 students that compete in approximately 30 tournaments annually.
Overall this year, the Bass Cats have won $37,500, which will help cover expenses for these tournaments, such as travel costs, T-shirts and gas.
“Fishing is an expensive sport in general,” Cosner said. “We have to cover tackle, hotels rooms and gas. It all adds up quickly.”
The event will be televised on Dec. 20 at 10:30 a.m. by Versus Country Channel.
“We had a professional camera in the boat the whole time,” McCollum said. “There are even featured interviews with our team.”
The Bass Cats will compete in the FLW National Fishing Championship at Lake Telew in Knoxville, TN, April 10-12. The winner will receive $25,000 cash, a $25,000 Ranger 177TR bass boat for the fishing club and $50,000 for the university.
