STAFF REPORT

San Marcos High School (SMHSPrincipal Michelle Darling recently announced that two students, Weston Hearne and Thomas Moore, were named as Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program.

A letter of commendation from the school and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) will be presented by the principal to the two senior students.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the U.S. are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. All students considered for National Merit Scholarships are required to take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

A spokesperson for NMSC said, “Recognition of high-achieving students is essential to advancing educational excellence in our nation. As demonstrated by their outstanding performance in our highly competitive program, the young men and women named Commended Students represent some of the most academically talented students in our country. We sincerely hope this recognition will enhance their educational opportunities and encourage them in their pursuit of academic success.”

San Marcos High School learned in September that three National Merit Semifinalists will advance to the next level to attain Finalist standing, Henry Finch, Irene Morse and Connor Wilson.

National Merit Scholarship winners for 2010 will be announced sometime between April and July of next year.
