San Marcos CISD Superintendent Dr. Pattty Shafer says the favorite part of her job is “celebrating students.” This fall, she began a new recognition program, the Superintendent’s Student of the Month, to celebrate a student who represents the district in an exemplary way.
September’s honoree is Elliot Cheng a senior at San Marcos High School. October’s Student of the Month, Abigail (Abby) Holder, is a fifth grader at Crockett Elementary School. Lauren Schweers, an eighth grader at Goodnight Middle School, is the November Student of the month.
Shafer met with each student to express her appreciation and congratulations. She explained that the student recognition is based on the “RATTLER” positive character traits of Responsible, Amiable, Thoughtful, Tolerant, Leadership skills, Enthusiastic, Respectful and Supportive.
Shafer wrote in a letter that went home to the students’ parents, “Teachers hope for classrooms that are full of students like your child who cooperate, get along well with their peers, exhibit good manners, and strive to do their best.” The parents were also given two bumper stickers that proclaim their child has been chosen as one of the Superintendent’s Students of the Month.
Elliot Cheng, the September honoree, is the son of Albert and Jennifer Cheng. He is in his second year on the San Marcos High School Student Leadership Team, President of the Future Business Leaders, member of the Interact Club, National Honor Society, and HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America). He plans a career in Bio-Medical Engineering, and hopes to attend the University of Texas.
Crockett’s Abby Holder, the October student of the month, is a fifth grader who loves volleyball, reading and playing outside with her brother. She was active in this year’s holiday food drive and recently earned the rank of the Order of the Black Prince in the Early Act First Knight program. She is the daughter of Clifford and Sara Frias.
Lauren Schweers is a member of the Goodnight Middle School volleyball team and is First Lieutenant of the Dancing Stars Dance Team. She is the vice president of the National Junior Honor Society. She wants to study dance and may follow her mother’s footsteps to be a Texas State University Strutter. She is the November Superintendent’s honoree and the daughter of Gary and Valerie Schweers.
