The Texas State volleyball team will play in the Southland Conference Tournament championship game Sunday after a 3-1 semifinal win against Lamar Saturday at Texas-San Antonio (UTSA).
The Bobcats won 25-17, 16-25, 28-26 and 26-24 in a match that grew more closely contested as it developed.
“The ladies really battled,” Texas State volleyball coach Karen Chisum said. “We could have folded after set two. It was set three where we were down, but we came back to win it. They really fought and our fans were good. We may not have played our best, but we played hard when we had to, to get the point.”
The Bobcats will play the winner of Saturday’s other semifinal between Nicholls State and Stephen F. Austin (SFA) for the title and the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. The match, set for 2 p.m. Sunday at UTSA, will be televised by the Southland Conference Network. In the San Marcos area, Time-Warner Cable channel 888 and Grande Channel 16 generally carry the conference television network.
Shelbi Irvin hit double-double for the seventh time this season, notching 21 assists and 14 digs in Saturday’s match for the Bobcats. Melinda Cave picked up her fourth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 13 digs against Lamar. Mo Middleton had 16 kills and eight digs, while Jessica Weynand had 10 kills and nine digs.
The Bobcats are 21-12 this season.
