Rattlers take first loss of hoop season

STAFF REPORT

Unable to keep up with Cibolo Steele’s speed and quickness, the San Marcos High School boys basketball lost for the first time this season, 67-43 at the Snake Pit Friday night.

The Rattlers fell to 1-1. They began their season Tuesday night with a 68-48 win at home against Crockett.

Steele led only 23-20 at halftime, but blew open a big lead at the foul line in the second half. The Knights outscored San Marcos, 34-2, from the free-throw line.

Chris Threadgill led the Rattlers with nine points. Davon Pete (13 points), Kendal Lewis (12) and Foster Robinson (12) all reached double figures for Steele.

The story was different Tuesday night against Crockett. In that game, the Rattlers began pulling away in the second quarter, extending their lead to 36-26 at halftime. The Rattlers proceeded to double that lead in the second half.

Alex Austin led the Rattlers with 13 points against Crockett, followed by Threadgill with 12 points and D.J. Gardner with 10.

The Rattlers go to Smithson Valley Tuesday night (7:30 p.m.), then return home against New Braunfels Canyon the following Tuesday, Dec. 1 (7:30 p.m.).
