Is Texas State a soccer hot bed? Look no further than this: The men’s and women’s soccer clubs at Texas State both have qualified for the National College Club Soccer (NCCS) championships to be played Nov. 19-21 in Phoenix, AZ.
Club teams are different than varsity teams in that club teams are operated from the university’s recreation department, rather than the athletic department. Club teams, therefore, are not involved in NCAA competition.
Both clubs clinched their regional championships and national qualifying bids in their final matches of their respective regional tournaments, held Oct. 31-Nov. 1. Each championship match extended into overtime, and each Texas State club won with penalty kicks.
Each team will compete among the top 24 teams in the country for their national champion titles.
“I am very proud of both teams hard work and dedication this season,” said Stephanie Thompson, a sport club director at Texas State. “Both teams have proven their success this season both on and off the field, and I hope they will continue the dominance at the national championship in Phoenix.”
The women’s bid for the women’s national championship was earned through victories against the Texas Tech, Texas and Louisiana State women’s club soccer teams.
The men’s club soccer team defeated teams from Lamar, Houston and Baylor on its way to secure the bid to the national championship.
