Winning for the tenth straight time with a three-game sweep at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday, the Texas State volleyball team vaulted to the top seed in this weekend’s Southland Conference Tournament with a 13-3 league record.
The Bobcats finished three games behind Central Arkansas, which dominated the conference with a 16-0 record. However, Central Arkansas is still transitioning from Division II to Division I and is ineligible for NCAA championships.
Texas State’s ten-match winning streak is its longest since it won 14 in a row in 2004. In the last two weeks, the Bobcats have rallied past Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin to grab the tournament top seed.
The Bobcats won their three games at Corpus by scores of 25-19, 27-25 and 25-22.
Jessica Weynand led the Bobcats with nine kills and four digs. Freshman setter Caleigh McCorquodale had 13 assists, seven digs and five kills.
The Bobcats move on to the league tournament at Texas-San Antonio Friday through Sunday.
Texas State (19-12 overall) will begin the tournament at 11 a.m. Friday against Southeastern Louisiana (9-18 overall, 5-11 Southland). At 1 p.m. on Saturday, the winner of that match plays the winner between No. 4 seed Lamar (9-7, 14-13) and No. 5 Texas-Arlington (8-8, 12-16).
The Southland Conference Tournament Championship Game will take place Sunday at 2 p.m., with the winner receiving the league’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth.Email | Print
