Longhorn running back stopped for DWI near Kyle

A University of Texas Longhorn running back was arrested for driving while intoxicated along IH-35 between Buda and Kyle early Sunday morning, the Hays County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Redshirt freshman D.J. Monroe, 20, was pulled over after a Hays County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a vehicle driving erratically around 1 a.m. on southbound IH-35, near mile marker 217, authorities say.

Deputy Manuel Delarosa stopped the vehicle, a silver 1996 Buick Park Avenue, and indentified the driver as Monroe. He was found to be intoxicated and arrested for DWI, a class B misdemeanor, authorities say.

Monroe was placed into the Hays County Jail on a $3,000 bond and released at around 11 a.m. the same day.

The Longhorns immediately suspended Monroe indefinitely, according to news reports.

This season, Monroe has 20 rushes for 110 yards and 13 kickoff returns for 474 yards and two touchdowns for the Longhorns. He is the only player in school history to return two kickoffs for TDs in a season, according to the university Web site.
