Going to the private school high school football playoffs after a 6-4 regular season, the San Marcos Baptist Academy couldn’t negotiate a tough home field defense in a 41-13 loss to Houston Lutheran North last Friday night.
The Bears totaled 109 yards of offense and 11 first downs. After halftime, the Bears were never closer than 14 points behind Lutheran.
Lutheran quarterback Kevin Hatrick attempted 14 passes, completing nine, four of them for touchdowns and none for interceptions. Hatrick threw for 184 yards, 110 of them to Marquis Fruge, who caught four passes, three for touchdowns.
The first touchdown pass from Hatrick to Fruge came with 9:20 left in the first quarter. Just more than two minutes later, B.J. Williams ran 23 yards for a touchdown, giving Lutheran a 14-0 lead.
Anthony Richardson ran six yards for a touchdown to bring the Bears within 14-6 in the second period, but Hatrick threw eight yards to chin, giving Lutheran its 20-6 lead at halftime.
Hatrick threw a 20-yard touchdown to Fruge halfway through the third quarter, giving the Lions a 27-6 lead.
Richardson led the Bears offense with 51 rushing yards and 22 passing yards.
