Bobcats bow out in soccer title tilt

Texas State fell short of making Southland Conference history by winning the league tournament two years in a row.

The Bobcats lost, 2-0, to Southeastern Louisiana in the tournament championship game at Northwestern State Sunday, ending a 16-game league winning streak that went back to Nov. 4, 2007.

The game was close throughout and the Bobcats had their chances, but couldn’t punch the ball into the net. Southeastern Louisiana took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute with a 30-yard kick over the head of Texas State goalie Mandy Mawyer.

The Bobcats had three good chances to score, but all were turned back one way or another. A shot in the 32nd minute by Britney Curry toward the corner of the net was met by stretching Southeastern goaltender Lacey Brockhaus. In the second half, a shot by Texas State’s Taylor Person kicked off a post before Brockhaus smothered the ball.

Karly Dagys tapped in the final goal for Southeastern Louisiana with just less than a minute left in the game.

“You never like to lose, especially since we were on such a great run,” Texas state head coach Kat Conner said. “But Southeastern Louisiana came out and played a great game. They deserved the win because they played a good game.”

The Bobcats end their season 14-6-1 overall. Southeastern Louisiana, 13-4-2 overall, will receive the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Texas State won the semifinal game, 2-1, against Sam Houston State, with Curry scoring both goals for the winners. The two goals put Curry at 18 this season for a new school single-season record, surpassing 16 goals by Danielle Holloway in 2004.
