Campus police chief warns of recent rash of auto burglaries

Thieves targeting vehicles parked in large student apartment complexes have hit dozens of vehicles with smash-and-grab burglaries since Wednesday night, Texas State University police chief Ralph Meyer said Friday afternoon.

Texas State police investigated six break-ins late Wednesday and 12 last night at the 384-unit Bobcat Village, 1301 Aquarena Springs Drive, Meyer said. Also early this morning, San Marcos police fielded six vehicle burglaries at the 575-unit University Heights II, formerly the Exchange 2 apartments at 1101 E. River Ridge Pkwy, police records indicate.

“We’ve just had a tremendous number of these cases were they’re looking for electronics, break the glass, take what they can find quickly and move on to the next vehicle,” Meyer said.

Meyer urges residents to remove valuable from the vehicle or store them in the truck. He also advised unplugging and hiding battery chargers which indicate the possible presence of electronics inside to burglars.
