The Texas State soccer team finished off an undefeated season in the Southland Conference (SLC), clinching the regular season championship with a 3-1 win at home on Oct. 30 against Texas-San Antonio (UTSA).
The Bobcats’ first-ever soccer victory against UTSA gave them their second straight league championship. The Bobcats haven’t lost a Southland Conference soccer match since 2007.
The Bobcats (13-5-1 overall, 8-0-1 SLC) will enter the SLC Championship Tournament in Natchitoches, LA, Nov. 5-8 as the No. 1 seed. The Bobcats have outscored their SLC opposition 19-3 this season.
Texas State seniors Andrea Grifo, Mandi Mawyer, Jessica Smith and Lindsay Tippit were honored during a post-game ceremony for their contributions to Texas State’s success in the past four years as the Bobcats closed out their home schedule.
With all four seniors in the starting lineup, Texas State rushed to 2-0 lead before halftime. In the 22nd minute, Grifo hit a cross from the right side that found Lauren Lewis 10 yards from the goal. Lewis connected for her first goal of the season. Taylor Kelley scored at 37:14 to give the Bobcats a cushion heading into the second half.
Texas State’s defense limited UTSA to just four shots in the first half and three shots in the second.
Meanwhile, Grifo assisted Erica Michaud with a quick cross that to tee up the goal that made it 3-0. UTSA scored in the 75th minute, when Chelsea Zimmerman put a high header past Texas State goalie Mawyer. The senior goalie made three saves, ending her regular season at home with a 9-0-1 overall record.
