Rattlers tennis goes to Region IV meet

The tennis courts at San Marcos High School will have a crowd of well-wishers supporting the undefeated Rattlers varsity tennis team Thursday morning before they head to the Region IV tournament in Katy this weekend.

Cheerleaders, parents, school officials, community members and the marching band will be giving the team a grand send-off at the tennis courts behind the school.

The team’s bus will get an official escort to the city limits from the San Marcos Police Department.

Following a remarkable 15-0 season, the team won the district championship. Under the direction of Head Coach Jack Hughes, the team also won back-to-back district crowns in the fall of 2008 and the spring of 2009.

According to the latest rankings from the Texas Tennis Coaches Association (TTCA), the team is ranked 13th statewide in Class 4A. The team finished its regular season 13-0 and 4-0 in district play.

After posting a perfect record during the regular season, 14 Rattlers were named first-team All-District 17-A. Five players earned second-team mention.

The first-team boys are Hunter Voyles, Jacob Lucas, Robert Lee, Jordan Ogletree, Sam Stone, Ben Posey and Ruben Juarez. The first-team girls are Daniella Suarez, Madison Gribbon, Claire Dennis, Gabby Garza, Effie Husbands, Olivia Hernandez and Carlie Porterfield. The second-team Rattlers are Angelo Ortunio, Thomas Moore, Andres Urrutia, Gabriel Gwyn and Elodie Siebens.
